Prior to circulating through the test article, the oil and water phases come together at the oil and water mixing point. The mixing point is located downstream of the Coriolis flow meters to measure flow rate and density of each phase individually.

The prime movers for the two-phase oil and water ICD flow test facility are two triplex pumps plumbed in a parallel configuration. These pumps are used to individually control the flow of the water and oil phases to the test article. In order to separately pump each phase, the suction of one of the triplex pumps comes off of the water side of the horizontal separator while the other suction comes off of the oil side. Both pumps have the following capabilities:
· Liquid flow rates of up to 16 gpm
· Pressures of up to 2,200 psig
· Differential pressures of up to 1,500 psi

A heat exchanger is installed in the ICD flow test facility to provide additional thermal control. The heat exchanger is typically connected to a chiller in order to lower the test fluid temperature, preventing an uncontrolled temperature increase caused by thermal energy.

Downstream of the oil and water mixing point, the fluid mixture is directed to a sampling system. The sampling system locks in a volume of fluid while the flow is diverted through a bypass. Samples are used to verify the water cut of the oil and water mixture.

Samples that are taken from the flow facility are transferred to a heated centrifuge for phase separation of the oil and water mixture. This is the primary method of measuring the test fluid water cut.

To heat the oil and water test fluids, the flow is directed through a flow-through circulation heater downstream of the test article. The heater is capable of increasing the test fluid temperature up to 210°F.

The flow rate of each individual phase is measured by a Coriolis flow meter. The Coriolis meters have the capability to measure volumetric flow rates from 0.1 gpm up to 16 gpm. Additionally, the meters provide a measurement of the fluid density.

SwRI has a pre-fabricated large ICD test fixture that is available for customer use. The large ICD test fixture was specifically designed to direct flow into the annulus outside of the ICD base pipe, through the ICD elements, and out through the inside of the ICD base pipe. · Sized for 6-5/8 inch ICD base pipe
· Rated for pressures of up to 3,000 psig at temperatures of up to 210°F

The operator controls the ICD flow test facility and data acquisition system using a custom software program. Although located a safe distance away from the flow loop, the operator can see and hear the facility during testing.

A horizontal separator is used to separate the oil and water phases. The separator was designed by SwRI for oil-water separation at oil viscosities of up to 1,000 cP. Because it was designed as a closed vessel, the separator can be charged to pressures of up to 260 psig at temperatures of 200°F.
